FPG and Gumbo

My son, who is on a cheese only diet lately just surprised me by consuming a rather large bowl of Daddy Dave's gumbo. I mean, ate to the point of licking the bowl clean. Amazing! Especially considering that Daddy Dave doesn't do anything mildly. He's been known to clear a room full of sinuses and leave tears in the eyes of grown men. My kid's got strange taste-buds, for sure. I'm just glad he ate something, finally.

He's teething, two bottom teeth, two top molars, all at once. Poor kid. Poor me... he's so fussy and clingy. This is the first time he's teeth have really bothered him.

Do you have a website that you visit regularly? One that, when you arrive there, it's almost like a homecoming?

For me it's the FPG site. FPG

This is a festival that Wil and I attended regularly before Jonas was born. I can't even begin to tell you what a group of amazing individuals we've met there.

You see, I'm pagan at heart, but I'm not much of a "practitioner" of the craft. You won't find me casting circles, invoking the elements, garbed out in flowing robes and chanting. Nope, I'm just not that elaborate of a person. To me, paganism is more about living life in tune with the earth. It's got about as much to do with flash and glimmer as Christianity does with the easter bunny or Santa. I'm a silent worshipper of the fallen leaf and the flowing water.

But festival... oh, my sweet festival. So many people. So many like-minded, earth-loving folks. And there's such a variety. There's your typical black-footed hippy, and then there's the Joe Schmo corporate banker that, for this one weekend, sheds the geekdom and let's it all hang out... quite literally.

There's comraderie between folks that, in every-day life, just wouldn't exist. There's love flowing from every corner of the park, it's thick, palpable, exquisite.

I miss fire-circle, with drums pulsing out the earth-beat, the dancers, sweat-glistened and the scent of burning dead-wood. The musk of incense. The laughter from the camp next-door. The lonely guitar strummed in the darkness. Lord Jacobus, the oldest Pagan in the state, smiling wisely from his chair, yellow-white beard flowing down his chest.

I miss Boom-Boom, the ever-child, fairy wings upon her back, belting out a song about her "big ovaries". I miss men in loin-cloths, women in less, the squeal of children chasing butterflies in the labrynth.

It's utopia, or at least, as close as you'll ever get in this life. And I'm not saying that pagan folks are the only ones capable of creating such a sacred space, where 500 or more people can gather and there not be a single argument or tiff, but it's the only place where I've ever experienced such. It's like coming home to family. It's like resting your head in the palm of the goddess, at least for one weekend out of the year.

I'm homesick for my FPG.

it used to be MTC but I'm so discouraged with MTC anymore. So little valuable interaction. I've given up on poetry forums because of it. It's sad really. I miss there being PEOPLE there, and POETRY and crits and, well, poetry.

*sigh*

Happy Full Moon!

E, I gave up on MTC a long time ago. There are still quite a few people there that give a shit about poetry, and who could form a close-knit and useful community again, but it's just hard to find a balance between the seriousness of poetics and the personal friendships that develop. The two seem to go hand in hand, and yet kill each other slowly. It's a strange phenomenon, for sure.

I still have dreams that one day it will be the great mecca that it once was.

Heh, and that's coming from the chick who doesn't write.

I guess this is a bit random, but I just thought I'd tell you an acquaintance of mine is performing at FPG. I don't know if you're into folksy acoustic chick music, but I have a feeling you'd like her stuff. She performs at the Memphis Gay & Lesbian Community Center and my favorite coffee shop, Java Cabana, all the time and I must say her voice is even more breathtaking live than on a recording. www.skinnywhitechick.com

So what do you want for your birthday? I'm hoping to get some photos my friends have taken this semester to put in a scrapbook, but in case that plan falls through I need a backup. :)

Love you sis.

p.s. I'm in a documentary about the Love in Action protests! My friend Will and I were basically the first two people to see a preview back in July and even that tiny 3 minute clip was so beautiful and inspiring it made us cry. Several friends of mine were also interviewed. I succeeded in talking the filmmaker into letting us show the film in the 1,100 seat theater on campus on November 1. It premieres tomorrow, however, at a local film festival. I'm so excited! There's a point to all the rambling, though. I was wondering if you would like a copy of the DVD when Morgan Fox gets around to releasing it to the public.

Hey Sis,

Acutally, she's going to be at Autumn Meet, which is a similar festival held on the same weekend. I've never been to that one, but I've heard that it's a great time, too.

Maybe this summer you can come down and we'll go to FPG together. I know you're not pagan, but neither is Wil, and he has a great time. It's more about open-mindedness, and that, my dear, you certainly are.

As far as birthdays go, don't get me a damn thing. Unless you can find an anit-hurricane serum or something. Pictures would be cool. I don't have many of you. The most recent are of christmas with your pink hair!

BTW, did you ever get your gift certificate from Amazon? I sent them a bitch letter and got a vague and garbled response.

And hell yeah I want a copy of the video when it becomes available! How cool is it to be able to brag about your little sister?

I'm proud of you. You know that, right? This college thing seems to really suit you. You make me proud with all of the things you're involved with. You'll be the one in the family that changes the world.

Anyway, Jonas is getting ready to shred his hands in the paper shredder! This walking thing sure is exciting! :)

Love you little sis,
Big Sis

Hey sis,

So you've heard of S.J. Tucker? I don't know if you've listened to her stuff or if you just saw her listed as a performer for Autumn Meet, but I was just curious. It'd be a bit odd if you've already heard of her, because she's a local performer and only just now "hitting it big".

I would love to go to FPG this summer with you, though. You've got me described to a T when you say I'm openminded. Anyway, if I come to visit, I'd get to see you and you'd have a spare babysitter at your house (assuming it's not blown away by Wilma). Wouldn't that be nice? :)

I have a lot of photos on my computer right now that I could send you - stuff from the protests and some photos from a pre-Halloween party I attended on Friday and some other random things. I am also waiting for a couple people to e-mail me pictures from BGALA events and I will of course get those to you when I can.

I can e-mail the photos I do have as soon as you'd like or I can wait and try to pay to get them printed out at Walgreens and put them in a scrapbook; it's your choice.

I'm really glad you're proud of me. I am really happy here at college and I really enjoy being involved in all the groups in which I hold office, even if it means I never have any free time to myself. It's cool that you think I'll change the world, because that's exactly what I intend to do (I'm not ambitious much, am I? haha).

I will send you a copy of the Love in Action documentary as soon as it is released. I also got interviewed about the Love in Action controversy today by a reporter for the campus newspaper, so if she doesn't misquote me horribly like someone did in an interview for something last semester, maybe I can send that to you too.
I can't wait to see the movie next Tuesday!

I completely forgot to contact Amazon and I'm horribly sorry. Mom said she talked to you about that. I checked my balance last night and they still haven't fixed it. I think you should just try to get your money refunded because I'd hate to see it wasted.

Give Jonas a big kiss for me.

Love you.

Hey little sis,

Just email me the pictures. You don't need to waste money on printing them out or anything. Heck, I don't even have any of Jonas's pictures printed. I just email them around, ya know. It's a digital world we live in.

I've never actually heard her play, I just checked out her website.

FPG Beltaine is in May. I don't know if you are still in school then or not. It's been so long since I've been in school that I have no idea when semesters end.

I have absolute faith that you will change the world. It's like you've been saving up your whole life for this particular time to shine. And shine you are.

Sorry about the amazon thing. I'll look into it in the next couple of days and I'll make sure that it gets taken care of properly... unless there's something else you can use. Either way, I had ever intention of giving you SOMETHING for your birthday. Sorry it got all screwed up.

Anyway, off to bed for me.
